Having spent many, many hours trying to capture dragonflies in flight, I appreciate what you're doing there. It's a serious challenge. To get that many decent shots in just two days is awesome! I have a tracking tip you might want to try: keep both eyes open, with one looking through the viewfinder, and the other on the dragonfly. This takes some getting used to, but saves zooming, reducing the chance of missing the shot. You can close your eye after getting the dragonfly in the frame, and concentrate on the shot. Finding a small, isolated pond can give better photo opportunities, as it concentrates the dragonflies into a tighter arena. In a more confined space, some dragonflies follow a somewhat recurring flight path. If you can identify that, you can intercept one at a suitable point, so it faces the way you want for the shot. Large aperture lenses are best for this. Some allow you to pre-focus at a set distance, which reduces hunting, and helps prevent focusing on reeds. During my last dragonfly excursion, I spent far too long swinging around a behemoth of a lens, and ended up with serious shoulder and neck strain. I swore that after that, I'd use a gimbal mount on a tripod. Haven't tried that since, but I think it's the way to go. It works well for planes.

I use the dot sight ee-1 for tracking them and it makes it so much easier with my 300mm f4.

Brilliant video about this topic and outstanding pictures! Due to budget constraints I just experiment with my Sigma Apo Macro 2.8/150mm + 2 extenders 2x Canon EF Mark II + Mark III. This equals to 600mm focal length and effective aperture 11. The optical quality is IMHO very good stepped down 2 f-stops. Autofocus is not completely impossible but unreliable with my Canon EOS R5, sometimes it's helpful for static subjects. Autofocus for subjects like a dragon fly that somehow changes it's position is IMHO not usable. What I need with my experiment is good sunlight, otherwise I would have to use too high ISO. So at least with this experimental setup, I need no ND filter :-) I think your equipment is really appropriate for this kind of difficult wildlife. Of course every thing comes at a price, this was the advantage of my experiment.

Excellent presentation, I have had very little luck this year. Congratulations on your images they are very good. I use similar technique but set the focus limiter using Menu settings, I also find zooming out then in hells considerably with focus acquisition.

Super shots! I love the hovering slow motion especially. I've lacked the patience to track dragonflies in flight so have very little video unless they are perched. I use a Sony RX10 iv.

This came up om my feed and I enjoyed it. Might be a bit late to comment now but I have seen an OM System Tech Guru suggest that using aeroplane detect AI works well. Not tried it yet myself but might be worth a go and see what you think, Dragonflies in flight revisited.....

This is sadly the lazy option. Whilst providing homes is better than no homes we should not be using drilled holes or bamboo canes if you want to help the solitary bees maximise their next generation. Holes and bamboo will get infested with pollen mites, Houdini flies, mono wasps, and other pests as left empty in the spring and cannot be cleaned out. Other wildlife and beekeeping organisations strongly recommend either nesting blocks that can be opened and cleaned out between uses or cardboard tubes that can be cheaply replaced to be housed in a standard nesting box that you get at any garden centre. See UA-cam videos by Crown Bees (I am in no way affiliated with them, they just have good explanations).

They look very happy! I’ve been doing research and It is recommended to replace bee hotels after 2 years, or wen cracks/splints emerge to reduce the possibility or fungal infection or other diseases 😮 Maybe you can try making another and slowly replace vacant spots in the old one? Just a suggestion! Hope mine looks as busy as yours one day ❤️

Just watched this again, especially since I've now got a OM1 myself. I'd say the auto focus lock on rate is very good compared to trying it on my old omd1 mk2. Going to try this bird detection on insects myself .

Great shots of the ovipositing northern emerald! While Ive found them not to be "rare" in the right spots, finding them there and getting such good views is still really challenging!

Dude, please do not tell me these toads are poisonous because earlier I touched one because my dogs almost killed it and they wouldn’t leave them alone so I decided to put them somewhere safe far away from my dogs, and then while I was holding the other one, I had one on my other hand, which was I think a kid in one the opposite hand which I think was the mother or the father and then the mother or the father was making that sound someone please tell me what that means when they make that sound because I thought the kid looked really cute and my dogs put it in a hole in the dirt so then I had a pool right next to it so I decided to wash off the dirt from it in the pool and then I was trying to figure out what to do with it then I put it somewhere around my house and that’s when I found the mother or the father so then I put the kid right next to the mother or the father but then I realized that my dogs were trying to find it and if they found them, they would tear them up so then I got two gloves I grabbed both the mother or father and then the kid frog would still. I think it was adorable and then I bring them over far away and that’s when it happened. The sound that it was making so so in the comments, please tell me what it means when they make that sound. Edit. I’m really sorry I made this comment really long. I just had a really long story to tell.

Thanks for the tips. I'm trying to shoot them . I got 1 photo with my Tamron @300mm the D fly perched with its thorax straight in the air. They don't hover and there very fast. Very hard to photograph
